Welcome to HS Art 2
In this year-long course, we will work on developing your artistic skills and continue to learn about the elements and principles of design. We will learn how to discuss works of art using appropriate vocabulary, and we will learn about the place of art in context. This course is divided into four units: Cubism & the Birth of Abstraction, The Altered Object, Appropriation & Juxtaposition: Contemporary Art Practices, and the Thematic Portfolio. Throughout the course of the year you will develop a high level of skill with a range of 2D & 3D materials and techniques. In Cubism & the Birth of Abstraction, we will explore the history of the first abstraction in Western Art, Cubism, and how in order to innovate, you might have to break some rules. We will learn how Cubism is a way of representing reality. From there we will study still life as a reoccurring theme in art and how the depiction of the object changed radically within the 20th Century. In The Altered Object, we will explore the use of assemblage and altered books while studying the Surrealists. You will be introduced to contemporary art-making practices in Unit 3: Appropriation & Juxtaposition. You will produce your own drypoint point print and stencil. In your final unit: The Thematic Portfolio, you will create a cohesive visual series that explores a single theme. You will compare your work to that of other artists and make personal and artistic connections. You will exhibit your final portfolio in the end of year exhibition. This unit encourages you to think creatively about how you will communicate with your audience and curate your work.
